Course Aim:
This course aims to prepare candidates to safely enter, work and exit low, medium and high risk confined spaces. It involves training on Access Equipment (Tripod and winch system, Rescue Retrievers), Confined Space Rescue harnesses, Atmospheric monitoring equipment, Ventilation, the use of Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (short/standard and extended duration sets and/or airline supply systems), Breathing Apparatus control procedures and the duties of the Top Person (Safety Attendant).
The course includes underpinning knowledge of Confined Space Legislation, identification of confined spaces and their associated hazards, confined space risk assessments and Safe Systems of Work for Confined Space Operations and the legal requirement and importance of a Confined Space Rescue Plan.
Practical exercises are completed using our purpose built confined space training simulator, within which delegates will descend/ascend and traverse a designated confined space, wearing an approved safety harness and breathing apparatus with face mask/hood. Delegates will be expected to crawl through over 36 metres of variably sized and shaped tunnels under various simulated emergency conditions that include; noise, limited light, and variable safe atmospheric conditions including smoke. Delegates will be expected to wear, carry, use and breathe using designated SCBA within a training simulator, wearing an approved breathing apparatus with face mask and PPE.

Assessment is by practical observation and written test.

Certification
All candidates who successfully complete the practical and written test will receive a TQUK
Level 2 Award in Working in High Risk Confined Spaces and TQUK Level 3 Award in Working as Top Person in High Risk Confined Spaces, valid for three years and a SOTA Breathing Apparatus E-Certificate valid for one year

Fitness to use Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA): Delegates will be expected to wear, carry, use and breathe using designated SCBA within a training simulator, wearing an approved breathing apparatus with face mask and PPE. The delegate will be expected to use SCBA under various simulated emergency conditions that include; noise, limited light, and variable safe atmospheric conditions. The employer/delegate is required to advise of any pre-existing medical conditions (claustrophobia, respiratory conditions like asthma, heart and/or circulatory etc.) as well as the physical strength and abilities required (e.g. wearing heavy breathing apparatus). A SCBA assessment should include spirometry, with workers who have either a low FVC (more than 1 litre below the expected value) or a low FEV1/FVC ratio (less than 70%) or those with a history of respiratory disease, e.g. asthma, being referred to an Occupational Physician.

Delegates MUST be clean shaven.
Delegates will be expected to descend/ascend and traverse a designated confined space within a training simulator, wearing an approved safety harness and breathing apparatus with face mask/hood and PPE. The delegate will be expected to crawl through a series of tunnels under various simulated emergency conditions that include; noise, limited light, and variable safe atmospheric conditions.
