Valid For: 3 years

Course Aim

This course is designed to prepare candidates for safe entry, work, and exit from low, medium, and high-risk confined spaces. It includes training on access equipment (tripod and winch system, rescue retrievers), confined space rescue harnesses, atmospheric monitoring tools, ventilation techniques, and the use of both Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus (EEBA) and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), including short/standard and extended duration sets and/or airline supply systems, along with Breathing Apparatus control procedures.

The course covers essential knowledge of confined space legislation, the identification of confined spaces and associated hazards, confined space risk assessments, and Safe Systems of Work for confined space operations. It also highlights the legal requirements and importance of having a Confined Space Rescue Plan in place.

Practical exercises are conducted in our purpose-built confined space training simulator. In these exercises, delegates will descend, ascend, and navigate through a designated confined space while wearing an approved safety harness and breathing apparatus with a face mask/hood. Delegates will be required to crawl through over 36 meters of tunnels of varying sizes and shapes under simulated emergency conditions, including noise, limited light, and fluctuating safe atmospheric conditions, such as smoke. Additionally, delegates will use designated SCBA within the training simulator, wearing the breathing apparatus and PPE.

Certification

Successful candidates will receive the TQUK Level 2 Award in Working in High Risk Confined Spaces, valid for three years, as well as a SOTA Breathing Apparatus Certificate, valid for one year.

Fitness for SCBA Use

Delegates will be required to wear, carry, use, and breathe using designated SCBA within the training simulator, wearing an approved breathing apparatus with face mask/hood and PPE. The simulation will involve various emergency conditions such as noise, limited light, and fluctuating safe atmospheric conditions.

It is essential that delegates inform the course provider of any pre-existing medical conditions (e.g., claustrophobia, respiratory conditions such as asthma, heart or circulatory issues), as well as any physical strength limitations related to wearing heavy breathing apparatus. Prior to participation, a SCBA fitness assessment should include spirometry, with workers who have a low FVC (more than 1 litre below expected value) or a low FEV1/FVC ratio (less than 70%) or those with a history of respiratory diseases being referred to an Occupational Physician.

Important: Delegates MUST be clean shaven to ensure a proper seal for the breathing apparatus.

Practical Exercise Details

Delegates will be expected to descend, ascend, and navigate through a designated confined space within the training simulator, wearing the approved safety harness, breathing apparatus with face mask/hood, and PPE. The course includes crawling through tunnels under simulated emergency conditions such as noise, limited light, and varying safe atmospheric conditions.
