Course Aim:
The aim of this course is to prepare candidates to act as a member of a Confined Space Rescue Team. To not only enter, work and exit low, medium and high risk confined spaces safely but to be able to enter and carry out a rescue as part of a team from within a confined space in an emergency situation.

This course utilises confined space rescue equipment involving training on Access Equipment (Tripod & Winch system, Rescue Retrievers), Confined Space Rescue harnesses, Atmospheric monitoring equipment, Ventilation, the use of Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (short/standard and extended duration sets and/or airline supply systems), Breathing Apparatus control procedures and the duties of the Top Person (Safety Attendant), Rescue Team member and Rescue Team leader.

The course includes the principles of casualty packaging and handling within a confined space using specialist stretchers and casualty handling equipment, rigging and recovery systems, vertical rescue systems, Emergency First Aid and Oxygen Resuscitation equipment. The underpinning knowledge of Confined Space Legislation, identification of confined spaces and their associated hazards, confined space risk assessments and Safe Systems of Work for Confined Space Operations and the legal requirement and importance of a Confined Space Rescue Plan.

Practical exercises are completed using our purpose built confined space training simulator, within which delegates will descend/ascend and traverse a designated confined space, wearing an approved safety harness and breathing apparatus with face mask/hood. Delegates will be expected to crawl through over 36 metres of variably sized and shaped tunnels under various simulated emergency conditions that include; noise, limited light, and variable safe atmospheric conditions including smoke.

All candidates who complete this course must also hold a valid First Aid Certificate. This can be added onto the course.

Fitness to use Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA): Delegates will be expected to wear, carry, use and breathe using designated SCBA within a training simulator, wearing an approved breathing apparatus with face mask and PPE. The delegate will be expected to use SCBA under various simulated emergency conditions that include; noise, limited light, and variable safe atmospheric conditions. The employer/delegate is required to advise of any pre-existing medical conditions (claustrophobia, respiratory conditions like asthma, heart and/or circulatory etc.) as well as the physical strength and abilities required (e.g. wearing heavy breathing apparatus). A SCBA assessment should include spirometry, with workers who have either a low FVC (more than 1 litre below the expected value) or a low FEV1/FVC ratio (less than 70%) or those with a history of respiratory disease, e.g. asthma, being referred to an Occupational Physician.

Delegates will be expected to descend/ascend and traverse a designated confined space within a training simulator, wearing an approved safety harness and breathing apparatus with face mask/hood and PPE. The delegate will be expected to crawl through a series of tunnels under various simulated emergency conditions that include; noise, limited light, and variable safe atmospheric conditions.
