Unit Overview

This unit is designed to enable the candidate to demonstrate the necessary skills and knowledge required to effectively sign, light, and guard a work site.

UNIT DETAILS

The candidate will be able to assess the work site and implement the necessary provisions according to location requirements. This includes ensuring the safe passage of pedestrians and site personnel, safeguarding vehicular traffic, accommodating special needs such as cyclists and horse riders, and providing for vehicles and plant machinery within the working area. The candidate will also be equipped to implement appropriate safety measures to protect pedestrians, vehicles, and site personnel. Additionally, the candidate will be able to manage and control portable traffic signals and Stop/Go traffic control in accordance with site location requirements and prevailing traffic conditions.

OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this course, the candidate will have the skills to carry out street works to the standards required by the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991.

Candidates who successfully complete the course will be registered with SWQR and CABWI, and will receive a Street Works Register ID card, demonstrating registration on the NRSWA register. Street Works cards must be renewed every five years.

CONTENT

  • Surveying the work site to determine suitable provisions for the location
  • Evaluating the safety of both the public and site personnel
  • Responsibilities and provisions for pedestrians, vehicular traffic, special needs (e.g., cyclists, horses), personnel, and plant machinery within the work area
  • Identifying and selecting the appropriate equipment to protect pedestrians, vehicles, and site personnel
  • Operating and controlling portable traffic signals and Stop/Go traffic control in line with site location requirements and traffic conditions
  • Planning and executing a signing, lighting, and guarding project
  • Understanding the types of work, basic principles, and legal requirements for signing and guarding
  • Conducting on-site risk assessments, implementing methods of traffic control, speed management, and operating portable traffic signals
  • Managing works on footways, cycle lanes, tracks, cycle routes, and near tramways and railways
